I. Can’t. Believe. This!!!

GUYS GUYS GUYS GUYS GUYS! I AM DYING HERE! PARTLY OUT OF EXCITEMENT, PARTLY OUT OF STRESS, PARTLY OUT OF NOT KNOWING WHAT TO EXPECT NEXT.

*deep cleansing breath like they do in the movies*

*doesn’t work like it does in the movies*

*feels really ridiculous because I promised myself that I would never do what anyone did in movies*

I have big news. And I don’t really know how to tell it. Have I ever mentioned that I am not good at telling people things that will affect their lives? (Well, it won’t really affect yours, only mine and my family’s  XD). I’ll just blurt it out.

Have you guessed it yet?

Dreamer…has…joeys….!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I HAVE A SUGAR GLIDER WITH TWINS IN HER POUCH!

AHHHHHHHH!!!!

I am totally making a fool out of myself. This blog is supposed to be semi-professional and informational.

Sorry, I can’t do that today.

I’m too excited/nervous/stressed/terrified/excited/happy/excited/excited/excited/terrified.

*calms down enough to look normal*

When we got Ink and Dreamer, we purposely got a pair that would do well breeding together. When it comes to sugar gliders, one of the biggest problems is inbreeding. Because there are so few sugar gliders in the US and because they have only been here since 1990, it is incredibly easy to inbreed. This can cause all sorts of problems in the babies including missing limbs, blindness, sickness, short lifespan, and the parents are more likely to cannibalize the babies. We made sure that we got a pair with lineage so that we know that they were not related to one another.

I’m still way nervous that she will reject or cannibalize her joeys. It’s one of the very sad things that can happen when you breed sugar gliders….

In any case, a little while ago, I started noticing that Dreamer’s pouch area appeared larger and more “fluffy”. At first I thought she was bloated or that she had just eaten more than normal but when it didn’t go away and the bulges continued to get larger….I began to suspect that maybe she had babies in her pouch.

I, of course, ran to the computer and spent a while trying to figure out if my assumptions were correct. Well. They were. It wasn’t long before I knew without a doubt that she had babies in her pouch.

Sugar gliders are only pregnant for about sixteen days. Then they give birth to rice grain sized babies. These babies crawl into the pouch and grow from there. The birth process only takes like five minutes and it is incredibly rare for a human to actually witness it.

Hence, I didn’t see it and didn’t realize that she had babies until quite a while later.

The babies stay in the pouch for a little over two months (nine weeks) and then they START to venture SLOWLY out of the pouch. They’re not fully wheaned until eight to ten weeks AFTER they first come out of the pouch. Mine haven’t started coming out yet, and they’re still pretty small. BUT I’m starting to get little glimpses of them when Dreamer is climbing on the side of her cage and a foot or a tail will slip out of her pouch.

I don’t know how I’m going to sell these DARLING babies!

I have to, of course.

I can’t keep them.

Nope.

But man. It’ll be so sad selling them.

*weeps*

I love them already and I’ve barely seen them.

But I’m steeling my mind. I. Have. To. Sell. Them.

Because if I don’t, they will mate with each other and I’ll get inbred babies.

Which I don’t want.

Nope.

Moving on.

It’s been really fun to watch Dreamer as a mother. Her pouch area is so giant now that she waddles around. XD I’m surprised that she can even walk anymore. She’s a LOT slower than before, but still adorable. She LOVES to climb under my bed and spend most of the out-of-cage time climbing around on the bottom of my mattress. XD XD

AND GUESS WHAT?! I HEAR HER SINGING TO THE JOEYS EVERY NIGHT. It’s adorable! It sounds like this.

I tried to get some pictures, but again, very hard. However, I’ll let you see what I got. 😉

EEEEP! LOOK! You can see the two tiny backs on either side! (The pink, blobby things XD).

 AND THERE ARE THE BABIES!

SOOOO CUTE!

Well friends, I will let you go for now! Stay tuned for more news about the development of the guys and hopefully pictures after they come out of the pouch completely!
